Safety Forum on Active Shooter Preparedness & Workplace Violence

Thursday, May 2, 2024 (7:30 AM - 9:30 AM) (CDT)

Description

According to a 2022 study on workplace violence, nearly 80% of companies are unprepared for an active shooter. Roughly 350 people are shot and killed every year while at work.  More than half of all HR professionals in our country do not know if their company has an adequate workplace violence prevention program, and 55% of employees claim that they are unaware or unsure of employers' emergency preparedness plans.

Workplace violence is any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and homicide. It can affect and involve employees, clients, customers and visitors. Acts of violence and other injuries is currently the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the United States.

It is imperative that firms recognize and understand the need to take constant and active steps to address both internal and external potential threats of workplace violence, and know that we cannot afford to take a “wait and see” approach to onsite safety. Join safety colleagues at the beginning of Construction Safety Month to hear Steve Stetson of DSP Insurance Services discuss "run/hide/fight" active shooter protocol and workplace violence prevention tips focused on causes, warning signs, security and evacuation.
